You can pick the regulars at the St Clair Hot Salt Water Pool.

As the pool closed  for the season yesterday, large numbers of tanned swimmers towelled themselves off and left with heads bowed.

One of them, Victoria Alba, who has been swimming at the pool up to five times a week for the past five years, was disappointed it was closing now.

She said the seasons were changing and the warmer weather was  continuing into April.

"The weather’s just coming right. The pool should stay open right through April," she said.

"It’s sad the pool is closing when the weather is so good."

Dunedin City Council community pools team leader Matt Austin said the number of people using the pool this summer was down on previous years.

"I think that’s just due to the fact that summer never really turned up.

"We only really got one week of really good weather towards the end of February, and then probably another couple of weeks of one or two-day chunks all together, of what we call really decent weather."

Mr Austin acknowledged the feelings of regular pool users, who were becoming more vocal about keeping the pool open for longer.

"We’ll take that on board ... and see if we can’t change things in the future.

"We’ve just got to look at the season breakdown ... see how things went and see where we want to go from here."

He said the pool would reopen on October 1.
