Planned intersection changes are expected to enable safe access to Mosgiel’s new swimming pool, due to open next year.

Traffic signals are to be installed at the intersection of Gordon Rd and Eden St, the Dunedin City Council has confirmed.

About 24 car parks will be removed in the area.

The intersection is near the Silver Stream Bridge, which is elevated, potentially creating a problem with sight lines.

Council transport group manager Jeanine Benson said there would be warning signs about the intersection at the northern approach.

The project is being led by the council, but Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is involved, because Gordon Rd is part of a state highway.

Vehicles travelling south along Gordon Rd will no longer turn right into Eden St.

Ms Benson said there was not enough space for a right-turn bay there.

Motorists could use Tyne St to get to the Eden St area.

The final design of the Gordon Rd and Eden St intersection was released last week.

Construction work on the intersection will start in September and is to be completed in time for the pool’s opening in mid-2023.

Car parks would be removed to foster a safe traffic environment, a council spokeswoman said.

A bus stop would shift further south in Gordon Rd.
