Sandy Trainor dedicates much of his life to the Mosgiel Memorial RSA, and is keen to keep up the good work as long as he can.

Mr Trainor (77), the Mosgiel Memorial RSA president, joined the club in 1992 and became a member of the executive committee in 1996, when he also took on the role of vice-president.

He has filled a number of roles through the years, including Anzac and Poppy Day convener, a role he still holds, and chairman of the welfare committee ''which was all about helping the aged and infirm returned servicemen''.

He has received a number of awards for his service to RSA. He joined Milton RSA in 1978, largely inspired by his father, who served during World War 2.

''My father didn't get overseas but he served in the armed services during [World War 2] in New Zealand.

''He was on the guns down at Taiaroa Head.

''As I got older I found out a little bit more about what RSA was all about and I thought 'that's for me' because I have the upmost respect for our soldiers.''

Mr Trainor said as long as his ''heart was still pumping'' he would continue to help at the RSA.

''I like helping people and that's me,'' he said.

The RSA played a large role in the Mosgiel community, with its community club open for everyone to join, and was a place for people to socialise.

The club has 1100 members.
