Santa prepares his presents in the Port Chalmers Town Hall Christmas cave.
It was the 10th year of the cave, which had seen about 4500 visitors over the years.
Project co-ordinator Bruce Clark said the cave featured five different festival experiences, including a chat with Santa, a tinsel forest and a visit to Narnia.
Elves would be there to guide people through the area.

Children loved the cave, but it was always great to see teenagers change from uninterested to excited about what they saw.
It would be available until December 23, he said.
"We can’t run it on the 24th because Santa’s busy."
