Otago Girls’ High School appears to be spreading its water wings, having bought the former High Tide restaurant, in Kitchener St, for use as a water sports base.

Principal Linda Miller announced the school had acquired the facility yesterday and said it would mainly be used by the school’s rowers and sailors, but may also be used for other outdoor education activities.

Ms Miller declined to say what the school paid for the building but said it was "much less than it was valued at".

"We’ve been very fortunate to have been able to acquire it for what we’ve paid."

The building is valued at $236,000 in the Dunedin City Council’s rates information.

She said the building was looking "a bit sad and neglected"  because it had not been used for a very long time.

The school planned to refurbish it over the next two years."We’ve got plans to make it look pretty nice and pretty swish.

"Everything is tied into the consent process. We’ll be working with the DCC over the next couple of years to bring it up to the standard that we would like — to a standard that’s going to provide outstanding outdoor education opportunities for our students.

"It’s a really exciting opportunity  ...  and the hope is to be able to develop it as a hub for outdoor education."

She was grateful to the North End Rowing Club for accommodating the school’s rowers in recent years.

"They’ve been great supporters of the school, but this is an opportunity for us to expand our rowing team.

"There’s keen interest in rowing at our school. Our rowing squad is up to 24 now and it’s building."
