Scientific body role

University of Otago Prof Parry Guilford, co-founder and chief scientific officer of Pacific Edge Ltd, has been appointed to the national Science Board for a three-year term.

Announcing the appointment yesterday, Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce said the board played a major role in ensuring ''we invest in quality research that benefits New Zealand''.

Pacific Edge Ltd is a biotechnology company that specialises in the discovery and commercialisation of diagnostic and prognostic technology for the detection and monitoring of cancer.

Prof Guilford is also the principal investigator for the Cancer Genetics Laboratory in the Otago biochemistry department, and was awarded the Sir Charles Hercus Medal for biomedical sciences this year.

He will replace another senior Otago academic, Prof Warren Tate, whose term on the board ends later this month.
