Usually, a low rumbling sound in the distance signifies an approaching herd of motorcyclists.

But yesterday’s Otago tour of scooters sounded more like a swarm of bees.

Scooter Division Dunedin organised a 200km loop ride starting from Mosgiel Z Service Station yesterday morning.

About 30 people took part in the ride which went from Mosgiel to Middlemarch, Macraes, Dunback, Palmerston and back to Dunedin.

Scooter Division founder Peter Brookland said the purpose of the ride was for people to "get out and have a bit of fun".

"It’s just all the guys out on little bikes.

"It’s about friendship and mates — it doesn’t matter what you do for occupation, we’re all brought together by small bikes."

Mr Brookland said a "large mixture" of bikes took part.

"There’s lots of Hondas. We’ve got bikes of various shapes from step-throughs, motorbikes, to Vespas. We’ve got quite a range today."

The group made a number of stops along the way including a lunch break at the Stanley’s Hotel, at Macraes.

"We do some regroups, let everyone catch back up again, make sure everyone’s OK, make sure everyone’s made it."

Mr Brookland created the Scooter Division as a way for bike "enthusiasts" to get together for monthly rides, he said.

"The last Sunday of the month we ride and because it’s March, we thought let’s do a big ride for Middlemarch."

The group also does smaller rides around areas such as Taieri Mouth, Mosgiel, Outram, and Karitāne.

The rides were open to everyone, some even travelled from Christchurch to take part, Mr Brookland said.

He said the group was all about "fun and inclusion".

"It doesn’t matter what you do or what you don’t do, anyone can come along and do it."
