The secret to peace can only be found within oneself.

That is the simple message a Buddhist scholar recognised as the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama’s tutor is here to deliver in Dunedin.

His eminence Ling Rinpoche spoke to an audience at the King’s and Queen’s Performing Arts Centre last night about how to maintain a peaceful mind in a turbulent world.

He told the Otago Daily Times the secret to peace was working on one’s own mind.

"It’s not an outside force which is making the world destructive, it’s your own mind."

"I think the turbulence in the outside world is all due a destructive mind.

"If we can bring about a happier and more peaceful mind, I think there will be less problems in this world."

A lot of problems in the world were caused by a negative thoughts motivated by greed, jealousy and anger that led to negative action.

"If we can control our mind, we can overcome all those problems."

His workshop in Dunedin was about how to bring about a healthier and happier mind.

His eminence was born in India in 1985 and was recognised as the reincarnation of late principal tutor to his holiness the Dalai Lama, Thupten Thinley, who died in 1983.

His eminence grew up in a monastery in southern India after being looked after in an orphanage as a child after the death of his mother.

He said he was trained in a traditional way to become a teacher and Buddhist scholar.

After graduating in 2015, he took on further Tantric studies and had been travelling and speaking to audiences around the world.

His eminence said a lot of expectations and responsibilities came with his role, but he just did his best and what was in his capacity.

The last time he came to New Zealand was in 2020, but he had to cancel the South Island part of his visit because of Covid-19.

"I promised to come back and now I’m here and I’m enjoying my stay," he said.
