The Otago rugby team may have not defended the Ranfurly Shield since last September, but the trophy has been far from standing still.
It has been here, there and everywhere around the province, with thousands of photographs taken with it.
From the Wānaka A&P Show to a visit to Trinity Catholic College yesterday, the shield, which was first played for more than 120 years ago, still has some magic.
The focus now switches back on to the field when Otago have their first defence for the year against neighbour North Otago tonight.
‘‘It’s been out around the community. It’s been everywhere from the Wānaka show to schools to community events. Went to the sports awards on Friday night,’’ he said.
‘‘We’ve had quite a few bookings and outings, which has been good to get it out around the community.
‘‘It’s still a trophy that connects with the wider public as well. People still line up to get a picture with the shield. It’s got a very big history and people just want to be part of it.’’
Mr Kinley said there was some interest in the game tonight and it was a chance for some club players to get out and stake a claim for a position later in the season.
The Otago side is made up of club players who will be champing at the bit to get out and play and defend the Log O’ Wood.
If they beat North Otago tonight they will take on Mid Canterbury in Alexandra next month.
