The rapid change in temperature punctuated the game of two halves the weather gods had in store for the city yesterday and prompted MetService to tweet about the drastic drop in warmth.
"#Dunedin Woah what a change, a drop of 11C in 10min!" the MetService tweeted.
MetService meteorologist Mariken van Laanen said warm northwesterly winds ushered in a bright and hot start to the day.
But just before 1pm the drastic drop was felt as a southerly change swept across the city.
"That brings cold air in," she said.
The change swept across the lower South Island yesterday afternoon, also causing a drop of 12degC in Oamaru.
As it headed up the island it would lose intensity, she said.
"I expect Christchurch will still see a marked drop in temperature but as it gets further north than that, it will weaken and there will be less of a drop."
While the southerly change ushered in heavy cloud and rain yesterday afternoon, the news on the weather front was positive for the weekend.
"It’s generally fine, although there will be some cloud around at times," she said.
"The fresh southwesterlies we have got at the moment will be easing tomorrow and on Sunday we are expecting light winds," she said.
Highs of 23degC are forecast today for Alexandra and Wanaka, while Dunedin can expect 21degC. Oamaru is predicted to reach 20degC and Queenstown will get to 19degC.
