Students again urged to lock up as thieves hit

Five thefts or burglaries from Dunedin student flats at the weekend have prompted police to re-issue a reminder to students to be more vigilant about protecting their property.

In one case, police hope a sum of foreign currency stolen will lead them to the offenders.

Constable Craig McDowall, from the Dunedin police intelligence unit, said multiple items were reported stolen in the four burglaries and one theft from flats in Harbour Tce, Clyde St, Forth St, St David St and Ethel Benjamin Pl.

In the Harbour Tce burglary, $800 (in Singapore dollars) and $US100 was taken.

He asked anyone who had seen any money in those currencies in the past few days, or had been asked to exchange those currencies to contact him on 471-5017.

Sergeant Matt Scoles, of Dunedin, said the burglaries were another reminder to students that opportunist thieves targeted the area because they knew doors and windows were left unlocked. Students needed to ensure their property was secure.
