Survivor of crash recovering

The sole surviving occupant of a rental van involved in a triple-fatality road crash near Luggate last Thursday is recovering well at Dunedin Hospital.

Three Hong Kong tourists died at the scene of the crash after their van collided with a truck and trailer unit at the intersection of Shortcut Rd (State Highway 8a) and State Highway 6.

The fourth occupant of the van, a 59-year-old male front-seat passenger, was taken to Dunedin Hospital by the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter with serious injuries, including possible leg injuries.

Hospital duty manager Shayne Wylie said yesterday the man was ''progressing favourably'' in a general ward and would hopefully be discharged ''in a couple of days''.

Mr Wylie was unsure whether the man's family members were in New Zealand.

The group were part of a party of nine travelling New Zealand in two separate vehicles when the crash occurred. It is not known how long they had been in the country.

The three people killed in the accident were male driver Wing Fai Chan (60), also known as Allan, and two female rear-seat passengers - Kwai Tei Chong (61), also known as Connie, and Yin Wan Ng (56).
