A water temperature of a bracing 11degC and an air temperature that failed to top 14degC meant surf life savers did not have much to do.

Saturday was the first day lifeguards patrolled at the beach. Swimmers will now be well catered for between noon and 5pm each Saturday and Sunday.
During patrol hours, the safe swimming area will be marked by red and yellow patrol flags. Daily patrols begin December 19.
Lifeguard co-ordinator Ossian Woods said there were eight rostered patrols with about 10 members each.
While the majority of patrolling members were under 20, the age ranged to more than 60 years old.
His advice for swimmers, as always, was to swim between the flags and listen to lifeguards’ advice.
