The Otago Daily Times understands the complaint centres on a female employee alleged to have taken up to $50,000.
Last night the company issued a statement from its Australian office, stating "We cannot comment on a legal matter that has been handed over to police following an internal investigation at the Dunedin site".
"The matter involves an administrative employee who recently left the business," a Cadbury spokeswoman said.
Further allegations funds may have disappeared from the staff's car park fundraiser were strongly denied by the company.
"The investigation does not involve any funds raised for charity and to the best of our knowledge all monies raised via car park collection have been accounted for and regularly passed on to the relevant charities."
Dunedin police yesterday confirmed a complaint had been received from the company and they were investigating.
Detective Neville Aitken said police were yet to interview the person involved, and declined to give further details about the investigation.
"No charges have been laid at this point of time," he said.
