Tired tourist ticketed for transit nap

Speeding and sleeping proved an expensive combination for two Australian tourists on a southern highway.

The two men, in a "station wagon-style" campervan, were caught travelling at 136kmh in a 100kmh zone, Sergeant Matt Lee, of Dunedin, said.

Fresh from visiting Aoraki/Mt Cook, the pair were heading south on State Highway 80 when an officer made them pull over.

The officer noticed one of the tourists lying down on a mattress in the back of the vehicle.

"The male advised he was taking a nap," Sgt Lee said.

The pair were educated "on the error of their ways".

"They were extremely apologetic and stated they hadn't considered the risk of their actions."

The driver was issued a $400 infringement notice for speeding and the passenger was given a $150 infringement notice for not wearing a seatbelt.
