Transport app for Dunedin delayed

A public transport app for Dunedin still seems a long way off.

The NZ Transport Agency recently stopped running its Choice App in Queenstown.

It was launched in November 2017 and ran as a trial in the town which finished late last year.

At its launch the agency said it intended to follow the Queenstown trial with a stage two trial in Dunedin as early as that year.

Agency regional relationships director Jim Harland said a decision was subsequently made with the Otago Regional Council not to proceed with the stage two trial in Dunedin at the earlier date.

He did not clarify why this was.

The agency would be "working closely" with the council as to when the most appropriate time was to trial the new Choice App in the city.

The agency was working on an improved version of the app, with a Queenstown, and possibly Dunedin, release date to be announced later in the year.

Mr Harland said the app was trialled in Queenstown, as it was relatively small which "made the app easier to manage and aided reliability", compared with larger places like Dunedin.

"This Queenstown pilot was seen as a valuable marketing tool to encourage people to try public transport under the new ORC-run Orbus service."

The app included a tracking service to show where buses were on the network. However, some users reported it worked only intermittently and it was difficult to know which bus was theirs.

The agency has not revealed what changes would be incorporated in the new version of the app.
