The University of Otago is continuing to experience a rise in student numbers, as enrolments for this semester climb by 166 equivalent full-time students from this time last year.

The figures were announced by university vice-chancellor Harlene Hayne, who hailed the numbers as "fantastic news" at a university council meeting yesterday afternoon.

The trend continues from 2018, when there were more 370 EFTS than the previous year in total.

A statement from the university released right after the meeting said the increase equated to a 1% gain, and both domestic and international student numbers rose - domestic by 0.6% and international by 4.6%.

Despite fears the Christchurch mosque shootings three and a-half weeks ago, in which 50 people died, would affect Dunedin's international student market, Prof Hayne said the university was not aware of "any cancellations or withdrawals of current or prospective international students ".

"Our staff who have travelled overseas in recent weeks have received feedback that the national response, led by the Prime Minister, has largely reassured the international community that New Zealand continues to be safe and welcoming for students from all parts of the world."

She was "delighted" by gains in Maori and Pacific enrolments, which were up by 3.9% and 7.1% respectively.

Commerce, humanities, and sciences all experienced a rise in student numbers - rising by 35, 74 and 75 EFTS respectively.

While the university saw 49 more school leavers, mature-student numbers were down slightly, due to changes to the health sciences first year curriculum programme, which resulted in an increased proportion of humanities and sciences input into the programme.

The increase in international enrolments was mainly driven by increased recruitment from the United States, China, India and Vietnam.

"We continue to value the diversity that our international student community brings to the university and our campuses."
