Four University of Otago staff have won annual teaching excellence awards from the university.

The four had shown ''dedication and passion'' for their work and would each receive $7500 to support their learning and teaching, award organisers said.

Dr Bradley Hurren, an anatomy teaching fellow, was recognised for his enthusiasm in creating an ''inclusive, supportive teaching environment'' and ''instilling a passion for science'' in students.

Haruko Stuart, a teaching fellow in languages and cultures, was honoured for her ''student-centred and communicative approach''.

Associate Prof Ruth Fitzgerald, of anthropology and archaeology, had been recognised for ''creating life-changing learning spaces''.

Associate Prof Michelle Thompson-Fawcett, of geography, was awarded a Maori teaching excellence award for ''reflecting the unique context of Aotearoa''.
