And did it run about. Driver Tom Bond ended up in a ditch, facing upside down.
All is not lost, though, as his partner is still speaking to him despite having wiped out her means of travel.
Mr Bond, a keen Dunedin rally driver who has competed in many rallies, lined up for a bit of fun at the Otago Sports Car Club Tarmac Autox at Stedman Rd in North Taieri on the weekend.
He powered up his 2005 Toyota Echo and gave it his best shot, until he misread a corner.
‘‘So I went into that a little bit too fast. Then there was another chicane and I tried to get through that without hitting the barrels that were set up. If I’d just taken out the barrels, it would have been fine.
‘‘But the instinct is to not hit them ... but by trying to get through the gap, I got out of shape, and it swung back the other way.
‘‘It’s a small car, so it flipped around, and then I was a passenger at that point.’’
It was not his first crash or his worst but it was the first time the car had ended up on its roof.
He was basically all right and got out with his hands held high.
Mr Bond said it was an event for everyone and every sort of car and accidents happened.
His partner was fine about the accident and she was still talking to him.
The future for the car was less rosy — some parts would be given to a friend or sold off and then the rest would be scrapped. As he was racing the car it was not insured.
‘‘It was a bit of a dumb mistake, but it was a good day overall because I walked away.’’
He was now on a hunt for a runabout.
His usual rally car was a 1990 Subaru Legacy RS and he had a project where he had a Subaru Impeza with a three-litre six-cylinder engine going in from a Subaru Outback.
