Carisbrook School is in experienced and impartial hands now Christchurch auditor Michael Rondel has stepped in as the school's limited statutory manager.

The BDO Christchurch audit and assurance national leader has more than 20 years' experience providing professional services to medium and large-sized corporate entities in New Zealand and overseas.

As well as being a member of public practice advisory group Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (Caanz), the New Zealand Institute of Directors and the New Zealand Institute of Management (Southern), he is also involved with many non-profit and public sector organisations.

He has been an independent member of the Christchurch City Council's audit and risk committee for the past 10 years; is an International Track and Field Trust trustee and former Harewood Golf Club board chairman and finance director; and has been an audit and risk committee member and trustee of the Arts Centre Trust Board since 2011, and chairman of audit and risk committees at the Teaching Council New Zealand and the Ara Institute of Canterbury since 2016.

Mr Rondel said he had a particular interest in the education sector because he wanted to make New Zealand's education system the best it could be for his children's sake.

"I've got three kids. My eldest is first year at university, my son is year 12 and my youngest is year 7.

"It's my way of supporting their education.

"I think the self-governance model [boards of trustees] is a good model, but the reality is, at various times, it needs assistance in the way that model operates."

He said providing his skill in financial management to schools was one of his ways of giving back to the community.

During the past 15 years, he has completed various statutory appointment roles at schools on behalf of the Ministry of Education as well as providing advisory services to various boards of trustees.

"You always go in with a mindset that you want to leave the place in better shape than when you arrived."
