Water restrictions still in council's mind

Dunedin's water restrictions are on hold for now after recent rain and reduced water consumption combined to ease pressure on the city's supply.

However, residents are still being asked to consider their water use and look for ways to conserve where they can.

Dunedin City Council 3 Waters group manager Tom Dyer said recent rain, including at least 6mm yesterday, was a reprieve, but conditions were still ``very dry''.

The city received 19.2mm of rain on Thursday and a further 2.2mm on Friday, but nothing over the weekend.

Residents had also heeded the council's call for voluntary water conservation, helping reduce consumption from almost 60,000cum a day to 45,000cum a day on average since Wednesday, he said.

``People have done a great job to reduce their water use but we need a lot more rain than we've had.

``Compulsory restrictions are still possible but for now we're asking people to keep up their efforts to reduce use,'' Mr Dyer said.

Council staff would review the situation every few days, he said.
