While the regular book buses may be having their Christmas holidays, one special bus is heading back to work early for a "tiki tour'' of the city's summer hotspots.

From Monday, the Hunt for the Wilderbus is on.

Dunedin Public Libraries mobile and home services team leader Jo Bailey said the tour was linked to the library's Summer Reading Programme, which encourages children to keep reading during the holidays.

Each day from 10am until 5pm, the book bus will be parked at different locations around the city.

Ms Bailey said it was a great way for book bus staff to meet new people and show them what the book bus had to offer.

The regular bus route had 49 stops during the week, but most were when children were at school, she said.

Book bus staff would take turns working on the bus throughout the day and were looking forward to doing ``something different'', she said.

"It's a fun thing for us.''
