A yacht was retrieved by surf life-savers after it became stuck in mud when it was tipped over in Otago Harbour near Vauxhall yesterday.

Two sailors were turning to come back to shore when their Z-class yacht was upended by a gust of wind, one of the sailors, Bruce Cloughley, said.

"It just got stuck in the mud, and once you're stuck in the mud, you just won't come out.''

A Surf Life Saving Otago search and rescue boat was called to the scene and the crew was able to pull out the wooden yacht, built in the early 1970s.

Several attempts to steady the boat failed as the swells continued to tip it over.

The other man on board, Chris Huddy, said the pair had sailed to Macandrew Bay and back before the incident.

"It's all good. No-one was injured.''

The boat was not damaged.

Both men were wearing life-jackets.
