Custard is a delicious dessert. But Kustard is Otago Girls' High School's newly crowned national secondary schools' hip-hop champion group.

The team competed at the New Zealand Competitive Aerobic Federation school hip-hop championships in Wellington recently, and the ice cream on top was winning the award for most outstanding hip-hop team in the competition, which included professional dance schools.

Otago Girls' High School dance teacher Kirsten Parkinson said the team members, Hayley Keenan (17), Ashlyn Monk (17), Bianca Keen (17), Kelsey Jones (18), Shinea Hammond (18) and Brittany Wong (17), had been dancing together since they were in year 9.

"They came up with the name Kustard when they were in year 10. Ironically, they don't even like custard."

Mrs Parkinson said the group members had achieved several placings at national level in the past, but teaming up with dancer and choreographer Daniel Chew took them one step further this year.

"This is their first national win. It means everything to them. They are passionate about their dancing.

"They actually wore their medals to bed, the night they won them."

Mrs Parkinson said the greatest delight for the girls was winning the competition before finishing school at the end of the year and going their separate ways.

Southland schools also featured in the competition.

In the primary schools hip-hop category, The Crooked Elbows (Lumsden Primary School) and Demolish (Southland Girls' High School) were second and third respectively.
