Kavanagh College pupil Alex Gorrie (18) was among almost 144,000 secondary school pupils able to see their 2010 NCEA results online yesterday.

He admitted he had not been up at the crack of dawn to check out how well he had done, but when he accessed his results about 2.30pm he found he had 98 excellence credits at level 3.

His subjects were art, physics, chemistry, graphics, physical education and religious education.

He was pleased with his results, although modestly pointed out they were not as good as his earlier results.

Next month, Alex will head to Christchurch to study engineering at the University of Canterbury.

He hopes this will lead to a career involving sustainable energy.

Alex also sat New Zealand scholarship examinations in chemistry, art and physical education but those results will not be available until the middle of next month.

For the first time, the New Zealand Qualifications Authority has made results available online before results are sent by post.

It will be Monday before the mailing of results begins.

The marked examination papers will be mailed out from January 20.

Yesterday afternoon, the NZQA was not able to respond to an Otago Daily Times inquiry about whether there had been any problems with online access.

Last year, there were 1.8 million individual standard entries in the examinations.

The NZQA will continue to make pupils' results available to schools and tertiary institutions so candidates do not need to provide a printed copy of their results.

Following the return of marked papers, candidates have until February 18 to apply for reviews and reconsiderations.

Pupils must be registered on NZQA's website to view their entries and results.

To complete this, candidates will need to know their NSN (national student number), which can be obtained from NZQA's call centre on: 0800 697 296.
