Review: Florence + the machine

Lately we have seen many great and talented female artists coming through the cracks of the music scene into the public eye, writes Victoria Spicer of Logan Park High School.

Artists such as Lana Del Ray, Adele, Nicki Minaj and M.I.A all have something original to bring.

Whether it's a crazy sense of fashion or songs that bring millions to tears, you would have to agree they are all extremely influential and are creating quite a big impression on people.

One of the best so far, is English Indie pop band, Florence + the machine.

Front-woman Florence Welch creates an infectious and addictive, uplifting effect with her soaring vocals and lyrics that are reminiscent of renaissance poetry with its themes of life, death, heaven and hell.

Her music does what music is supposed to do; take you away in a moment, and provide a feeling offering an experience.

This is where the magic of music lies.

Welch comments that she writes her best songs late at night and in random moments where inspiration happens to strike; "you're lucid" she explains "but you're not really there. You're floating through your own thoughts, and you can pick out what you need. I like those weird connections in the universe".

Her spontaneous method of making music and writing lyrics results in creating music that is really out there and takes you away into one of Welch's episodes of either being consumed with love, or completely done with it.

I think one of the things people like most about the music is the feeling of celebration and the casting out of negative feelings.

Although most other music on the top 40 can be categorized as "happy" music, it doesn't really have the same effect.

You may find that the lyrics of that, "happy music" has no depth, and neither does the music so it doesn't take long before the songs go from uplifting, to annoying and repetitive.

Whereas music with some substance, you never really get sick of (unless you blast it daily).

Another area that Florence + the machine are great in, and that artists like Justin Bieber and Lmfao are seriously lacking, is live performances.

Welch has a stage presence to rival that of maniacs such as Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain.

So you would have to agree there is something truly magic about this new band, but where did they come from?

And how did Florence Welch develop her unique voice and style?

The band first appeared in its earliest stage while Florence was at high school, in the form of a collaboration with friend Isabella Summers who is currently the keyboard player.

They were originally called "Florence Robot and Isabella Machine" because of a personal joke, but as they started playing at venues, the lengthy name got too annoying and was shortened to "Florence + the machine".

Florence found her voice while at Art School, where she would sleep all day and was awake all night making art and music.

It was this transient existence and a few dramatic love affairs that resulted in the almost manic-depressive mood of her songs today that succeed on taking you on her many emotional roller coasters.

Although Welch has said she doesn't really have any direct influences, she is constantly compared to the likes of Bjork, Souxie and the Banshees, and Kate Bush.

Grace Slick from Jefferson's airplane was one of her childhood heroes so she probably had a lot to do with Welch's persona or just as an inspiration to get out there and make music.

With so many original and inspirational female artists, for girls growing up, to look up to, we can only expect to see more talented women in the future.
