About 38,000 homes and businesses in the lower North Island lost power this afternoon after a bird's nest at a substation caused a large outage.
Transpower said the outage had affected customers in the Upper Hutt, Masterton, Mangamarie and Greytown areas.
Spokeswoman Rebecca Wilson said the fault was caused by a bird's nest coming into contact with electrical equipment at the Masterton substation, causing a small fire.
Power had been restored to the Upper Hutt and Greytown areas, she said.
However, power was still out in Masterton and would not be restored until further remedial action could be taken.
"We will advise on restoration times for this area as soon as possible," Ms Wilson said.
