A person has died in a three-vehicle collision on State Highway 2 at Apata in Bay of Plenty.
Diversions are in place and police are asking people to avoid travelling in the area while they deal with the crash.
A person had become trapped in a van in the crash, which happened 300m north of Apata Station Rd at midday.
Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said that person had been freed but the crash was serious and the section of highway would remain closed for up to four hours.
Traffic is being diverted down Wainui South Rd, Esdaile Rd and Apata Station Rd.
Northern Fire Communications shift manager Scott Osmond confirmed someone had died at the scene.
At least three people have been taken to Tauranga Hospital with serious and moderate injuries.
