Heritage trams planned for Auckland's waterfront have arrived from Melbourne and are on target to be running in time for the Rugby World Cup.
The trams arrived at the Port of Auckland yesterday as work on the tracks continues in Wynyard Quarter, on the city waterfront just west of Viaduct Harbour.
They will be the first trams to run in Auckland since the city's tram network was removed in 1956.
Waterfront Auckland leased two 1920s trams -- a 52-seater W2 Class tram and a 32-seater X-1 Class tram -- to run in the redeveloped Wynyard Quarter, the area previously known as the Tank Farm due to the chemical and petrol storage tanks in the area.
The trams, which have been painted in 1950s-style carnation red, will run in a 15-minute clockwise circuit along Jellicoe, Halsey, Gaunt and Daldy Streets.
They are due to be operational in early August, a month before the start of the World Cup.
