A man died after suffering from a medical condition and falling into the water off Tapuaetahi Beach, near Kerikeri, in the Far North today.
Police and emergency services responded to reports of a person in difficulty at the beach about 1pm.
A police northern communications spokesman said it was found the man, in his late 20s, had been under water for some time.
Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
"Preliminary indications are that the man may have suffered from a medical condition and has then fallen into the water," the spokesman said.
Police have identified the man and are in contact with his family.
