Police are investigating a "cowardly" aggravated robbery on two men in Wellington early today.
Detective Sergeant Damian Murphy of Wellington CIB said about 3am the pair were attacked and robbed in Strathavon Road, Miramar by three men.
The victims were walking along Strathavon Road when the "cowardly assailants" ran at the victims from behind, Mr Murphy said. The men were assaulted and both were knocked unconscious during the assault.
They suffered cuts, bruises and a chipped tooth as a result of the beating.
The offenders stole a wallet and other items from the pockets of the unconscious men before making their escape.
"These individuals displayed total disregard for the safety of their victims. "This was a completely unprovoked attack on two men who were simply making their way home at the end of their night," Mr Murphy said.
The three offenders were described as Maori or Polynesian aged in their late teens to 20's.
Police would like to hear from anyone who saw what happened, or who have any information that could assist the inquiry.
