Police find body of missing man in Christchurch lake

Police have located the body of a man who was reported missing in a Christchurch lake on Sunday night.

A police spokesperson said the man was in the water at Lake Rua, Harewood, when he went missing about 6.50pm.

The surrounding area remains closed to the public.

A formal identification process will take place and the death will be referred to the coroner, the spokesperson said.

The police dive squad joined the search for the missing man this morning.

Lake Rua at Toro Kōhatu Reserve is a popular spot for swimming, dragon boating and sailing.

"Members of the public can expect to see an increased police presence around the area today," the spokesperson said earlier today.

Search and rescue teams spent last night and this morning looking for him.

The Aoraki Open dragon boating event was held at Lake Rua on Sunday.

Aoraki Dragon Boat Association president Karen Lloyd-Griffiths told RNZ she and another board member were the last to leave the lake about 5.30pm following the regatta.

"It is a very sad and sobering turn of events, especially following such a wonderful spring day. Our thoughts are with his whanau and this time," she said.

All training sessions are cancelled until further notice, Lloyd-Griffiths said.
