Sprinkler snuffs out suspicious fire

A warehouse sprinkler system prevented a deliberately lit fire causing major damage to a Palmerston North warehouse this morning.

Firefighters were called to the building in Keith St, Roslyn, about 3am today, said Milson Fire Service station officer Bevan Clark.

The large warehouse had been broken into. Tyres and debris were set on fire inside, however the concrete floor and the building's sprinkler system meant the fire did not spread, he said.

The building was smoke-logged but suffered no structural damage.

Police were investigating but were not available for comment this morning.
