Warning of severe winds, rain

Winds of up to 120kmh are expected to hit eastern areas including Otago today as yet another spring front moves across New Zealand.

The MetService issued a severe weather warning and watch yesterday afternoon for wind and rain.

MetService weather ambassador Bob McDavitt said it was typical of spring fronts and would produce conditions similar to those on Tuesday.

It would drop temperatures around the region, with Dunedin expected to go from yesterday's high of 17degC to 13degC today.

"Rain is forecast to be briefly heavy in western areas of the South Island. It is also likely to be very windy for a while on Saturday in eastern areas from Southland to Wairarapa, and in Wellington, with the highest gusts reaching around 120kmh."

Behind the front, a southerly change was likely to sweep across the east of the South Island during today, bringing cold rain and snow down to 600m.

The bad weather should clear quickly, bringing frosts tomorrow to Central Otago towns and fine and sunny weather to Dunedin.
