Woman gives evidence in Kuggeleijn trial

The young woman alleging she was raped by a Northern Districts cricketer has started giving evidence by telling how the pair met in a trial expected to run for four days.

Scott Kuggeleijn (24) faces one charge of sexual violation by way of rape on May 17, 2015 and his trial at Hamilton District Court started today.

The 21-year-old, who has name suppression, said she and a friend attended the 18th Birthday party at a Hamilton flat before they all went into the bars in town about midnight.

There were about six others at the party and the Waikato University student said Kuggeleijn was the only person she hadn't met before.

They all chatted and the woman admitting to having drunk about six vodka RTDs (pre-mixed alcoholic drinks), three-quarters of a bottle or wine and up to four tequila or vodka shots before heading to town at midnight. She said she was "starting to become fairly intoxicated" at this stage and was laughing, flirting and having a good time.

The group was driven into town by one of the men at the party who was the sober driver and dropped four people including the Birthday boy, Kuggeleijn, the complainant and one other outside the bars at the north-end of Victoria St before going back to get the second car load. The woman's girlfriend was in the second car load and had promised to meet up with her.

The complainant said the group dispersed and she and Kuggeleijn headed into Furnace bar where she headed straight to the bathroom.

She then fell asleep or was "semi-comatose" for a while before meeting up with Kuggeleijn.

She said she did not recall meeting him in the corridor but has since seen video footage which shows she did.

She also text messaged friends "help" as she was not feeling in a good state, but said she was struggling to swipe her phone to reply or to answer.

At the bar Kuggeleijn and said he bought her an orange drink, which she assumed had vodka in it.
