
Police are seeking witnesses after a multiple-vehicle crash near Wānaka left several people seriously injured yesterday.
The crash happened on Cardrona Valley Rd about 4pm.
A Hato Hone St John spokesman said one person was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition and two other people were flown to Dunedin Hospital. At least one was in a serious condition.
Two other people were taken to Dunstan Hospital, one in a serious condition, the other in a moderate condition, he said.
In an update on Thursday afternoon, Senior Sergeant Fiona Roberts, of Wānaka, said police were seeking witnesses to the crash.
"We would like to speak with anyone who saw the accident, or witnessed the manner of driving prior to the crash."
She said the road had been reduced to one lane this afternoon so further inquiries could take place.
"It is important we all continue to do everything we can to prevent lives being lost on our roads.
"We urge motorists to ensure everyone in your vehicle is safely restrained, drive at a safe speed for the conditions under the posted speed limit, put your cell phone away, and ensure you're free of fatigue, alcohol and drugs."
A spokesman for the Queenstown Lakes District Council this morning said a section of the road between Wānaka and Cardrona was expected to be reduced to one lane of stop/go around 1pm.
