Crown casts newcomer as Princess Diana

British newcomer Emma Corrin has been cast to play Princess Diana in The Crown.

It's the first major role for the actress, who plays the ill-fated future wife of Prince Charles in the Netflix drama series.

Her credits include a guest part on Grantchester and the upcoming projects Pennyworth for TV and Misbehaviour for the big screen.

In a statement on Tuesday, Corrin said she was honoured to be joining The Crown calling the late Diana an "icon" who remains an inspiration.

Series creator Peter Morgan said Corrin has Diana's youthful innocence and beauty, along with the range to portray her shift as teenager Lady Diana Spencer to worldwide fame as the Princess of Wales.

Diana had sons and heirs Prince William and Prince Harry with Charles, but the couple separated in 1992 and divorced in August 1996.

She died a year later in a car crash in a Paris tunnel in August 1997 at the age of 36.

Different stars play the Royals every two seasons.

Series three, spanning 1964-70, is set to debut later this year. Olivia Colman will take over Claire Foy's role as Queen Elizabeth, Tobias Menzies will play Prince Philip and Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret.

Corrin will join The Crown in season four.
