Work is under way on teenage sailor Jessica Watson's damaged yacht ahead of her world-record breaking attempt.

The yacht Ella's Pink Lady was damaged in a collision with the 63,000-tonne cargo vessel Silver Yang off North Stradbroke Island in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The 16-year-old Queensland schoolgirl was heading to Sydney on a test run before attempting to break the record for the youngest person to sail solo around the world.

Jessica has strong Otago connections and her grandparents, who live in Lowburn, have backed her to bounce back

Her journey could be back on track within two weeks after work began on repairing her yacht on the Gold Coast on Thursday.

The yacht is being repaired for free at the Gold Coast City Marina, thanks to a number of businesses donating equipment and labour.
