Chain Hills Tunnel, Dunedin

Once built for trains...now made for exploring.
Once built for trains...now made for exploring.
Carved through the hills in the 1870s, the Chain Hills Tunnel is a 462-metre Victorian brick tunnel that carried rail traffic until 1914, when a newer double-track route replaced it.

After years of abandonment, more than a century later its purpose has changed.

Now part of the Dunedin Tunnels Trail, we can once again move through a piece of Ōtepoti’s history.
