The alarm was raised at the Slow Cuts restaurant in the centre of the town about 4.15pm today.
Crews from Queenstown and Arrowtown, and the command unit from Alexandra, arrived at the scene about 4.30pm to discover the fire "well involved", a Fenz spokesman said.
The restaurant is a two-storey building and the fire is in the kitchen.
The main street of Arrowtown was closed to allow firefighters to work and the fire was contained by 5.15pm.
