Many strict rules on rural housing development in Queenstown are being loosened by the Planning Bill, which one local planning consultant says opens the door for a lot more housing in the Whakatipu’s rural area. Changes include disregarding effects on the landscape if it’s not ‘outstanding’, and views from private properties must be disregarded, leading to concerns a lot of protection in the area may be undone.
