Search and rescue exercise off Waikouaiti

A multi-agency search and rescue exercise was held today off the coast of Waikouaiti, about 30 minutes drive north of Dunedin.

The exercise had a focus on the Matanaka Caves area and local search and rescue partner agencies were involved.

They included Surf Life Saving, Otago Rescue Helicopter, Coastguard, Marine SAR, Water Rescue Squad, AREC and recreational boats.

Sergeant Nathan White, Otago Coastal SAR Coordinator, said a marine search will be carried out which may involve recovering missing parties.

“The public can expect to see volunteers and mannequins in the water as part of this and should not be alarmed.

"We hope to enhance multi-agency response and be more prepared for an emergency event, as well as enhancing current skills and practices.”

The exercise would start about 8am on Matanaka Dr and finish about 1pm.
