A 17-year-old driver and his three teenage passengers were taken to Lakes District Hospital on Saturday afternoon after a crash at Closeburn, between Queenstown and Glenorchy.

The incident happened just after 12.30pm when the car left the road, went down a bank and came to rest against a tree.

Constable Blair Duffy said early indications were speed and inexperience caused the crash.

One person was transferred to Invercargill yesterday afternoon with a facial injury, and after assessment at the Lakes District Hospital, the other three were discharged.
