Golf: Facer conquers conditions

Thomas Facer (18) confirmed his status as Otago's top junior when he added the Greg Turner Tour win to his Otago under-23 and under-19 titles at the Hills and Millbrook courses during the weekend.

On Saturday, he scored 75 at The Hills in atrocious conditions, which saw many scores soar, including that of frontrunner Thomas Forbes, who crashed to 86.

Facer had two triple bogeys in his round but a stream of birdies and some steadying pars got him home.

He followed up with 74 at Millbrook on Sunday, ensuring first place and a $1000 voucher to spend on coaching and/or equipment.

Forbes scored 77 at Millbrook for second place on the tour, while Antony McCullough posted a sub-par 70 in the second round.

Chadol Han (Queenstown) scored 78 and 74 for the second best gross of the day, three shots behind Facer.

Laura Hoskin was the leading girl in the series, carding 81 and 77 during the two final rounds.

Otago's leading golfers played with the juniors and top scorer was Mahal Pearce with 71 and 67 for a 138 total.

With his tee-to-green shot making, he looks set to return to the form which won him the 2003 New Zealand Open.

Otago No 1 Brent McEwan was six shots back with 73 and 70, while Otago representative Michael Smith carded 78 and 69.
