Moffit claims gold by a wide margin

Cameron Moffitt showed his all-round class in Christchurch over the weekend.

The 16-year-old Hill City-University athlete claimed gold in the 16-17 grade of the athletics combined events national championships.

He accumulated 6227 points in the decathlon, beating second-placed Eli Leifi (Christchurch Old Boys United) by more than 1000 points.

It was just one point off his best score, recorded at the Otago combined events championships last month.

Moffitt, predictably, excelled in the 110m hurdles, running a time of 15.32sec to score 811 points.

He also broke 700 points in the 100m by running 11.50sec and in the discus with a throw of 42.87m.

Ariki’s Sarah Langsbury finished second in the 16-17 girls heptathlon.

Her 4034 points was surpassed only by Christchurch’s Julia Burnham, who won with 4529 points.

She also scored highest in the hurdles, running 15.01sec in the 100m race to gain 874.

Likewise, her time of 25.63sec helped her to 830 points in the 200m.

In the 13-16 girls hexathlon, Taieri’s Jorja Gibbons finished third with 2532 points. Her best score came in the 200m, where she ran 27.85sec to score 643.

Shay Veitch and Cole Gibbons both finished fourth in the senior men’s and boys 13-16 events respectively.
