Runners take on chilly Barnes

There were some barnstorming results at the Barnes Cross-Country yesterday.

Dunedin’s finest runners braved the chilly start to contest the long-standing handicap race at Kettle Park.

Young Hill City-University runner George Solomon was the first man across the line in the 5km and Dalise Sanderson (Ariki) was the first woman.

Hill City Jake Owen won the overall men’s 5km event in 15min 17sec, ahead of Leith’s Stephen Johnson in 16min 16sec.

Leith runner Laura Bungard held off Eva McLean (Hill City) and Margie Campbell (Leith) to win the women’s event in 18min 51sec, 3sec head of McLean and Campbell.

The Hill City side of Solomon, Caleb Dobier, Alena Cooney, Lucy Fitzgerald, Oliver O’Sullivan and Joanna Hare won the open men’s and women’s 5km team race.

Among the other highlights was Daniel Kelleher (Caversham) who won the men’s under-20 race in 16min 18sec and Melanie Button (Leith) who won the women’s under-20 event in 20min 31sec.

Taieri walker Tom Cockerill, competing in the men’s 80-84, was the fastest man in the 5km walk in 41min 05sec and Lara Findlader (Caversham) was the fastest woman in 37min 18sec.

There was also some very strong races across the under-16s and masters grades.

Most athletes will be back in action at the Edmond Cup on June 27.
