Two helicopter crews and dozens of rural firefighters worked in soaring temperatures to contain a large grass fire near Millers Flat yesterday afternoon.

The fire began in waist-high grass in farm paddocks beside Smiths Rd, shortly before 5pm.

Firefighters worked until late last night, dampening down hot spots.

Rural firefighters from the Central Otago District Council, volunteer firefighters from Millers Flat and Roxburgh, and two helicopters equipped with monsoon buckets fought the blaze.

A Fire Service spokesman said at its peak the blaze covered an area 1km by 500m.

"It did extend down the back of the property into gullies and we have not determined how much extra areas it covered."

The blaze was under control by 8pm, and crews were working to dampen hotspots. It was too early to determine the cause of the fire, he said.

Te Anau firefighters also attended a large fire on Doubtful Island, Lake Te Anau, which was up to 1ha in size at its peak.

The blaze, which was believed to have started from a camp fire, was bought under control by 7.30pm and crews worked to dampen down hot spots.
