The local Whangarei Boys' High School team won the national schools title at the Waipu Golf Club yesterday, finishing 5-over-par with consistent rounds of 73, 74, 74 and 75.

Inclement weather reduced the final to 18 holes which changed the event into a race rather than a marathon.

St Bedes (Christchurch) finished second five shots off the pace, while the Otago representative, Wakatipu High School, came in third one shot further back. At the turn, the Whangarei team turned 1-over counting its best three scores with Wakatipu second two shots back.

But a poor finish resulted in the Otago side going from 5-over to 11-over in the last four holes.

Coach Ben Gallie said dropping six shots from the best three scores in the final four holes proved costly.

Ryan Chisnall (Nelson) was the top individual, scoring 70 in wet conditions, but Queenstown's Jamie Anstiss made his mark to finish as the second individual with a a par 72.

Samson Kim posted a 76, Dong Young Kim scored 79 and Sangwoo Han 80.

• New Zealander Michael Campbell has finished tied for 14th at the European Masters in Switzerland, APNZ reports.

Campbell carded a 4-under-par 67 in the final round at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club to climb 11 places and claim $46,000.

Campbell had rounds of 70, 71, 67 and 67 to finish on an 8-under total, eight shots back from Scotland's Richie Ramsay who won the event by four shots.

Campbell, an eight-time winner on the European Tour and former US Open champion, had three birdies on the front nine to make the turn in 3-under 33. He combined two birdies and a bogey coming home to sign for a 67.

He was just shy of his best result for the season which was a tie for 11th at the French Open in August.

He has now won $147,000 in 2012 and ranks 146th on the Race to Dubai standings. Campbell needs to finish inside the top 60 players on the European Tour money list to qualify for the season-ending championship.
