Two Teviot Valley licensed premises sold alcohol to a 17-year-old during a controlled-purchase operation on Friday night, one after checking the teenager's identification, which was doubly disappointing, Alexandra police said.

Sergeant Derek Ealson said he would not name the two licensed premises at this stage, but an application would be made to the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority to suspend the managers' certificates and liquor licences.

The two were among six Teviot Valley premises with on- and off-licences visited during the operation, which was carried out by police and Public Health South.

Two 17-year-olds attempted to buy alcohol at each place.

''The results were disappointing in relation to the non-compliance, especially since one has checked the 17-year-old's ID first before selling the alcohol to that person,'' Sgt Ealson said.

''It's of concern, too, with Blossom Festival approaching. It's the manager's or bar staff manager's responsibility to thoroughly check and confirm the age of people being served, as this is part of their responsibilities and duties as safe hosts, and assists the community to reduce alcohol use by minors.''
