Singles player Ken Walker could play a decisive role in Taieri's bid to make the national final of the interclub sevens at Balclutha over the weekend.

The other finalists in the men's regional zone six competition are Te Rangi (Southland), Milton (South Otago), Alexandra (Central Otago), Phoenix (North Otago) and Kia Toa (South Canterbury).

Walker was a member of the Fairfield team that won the national final in 1998 and 2002. The only other club to win the national final twice is Aramoho (Wanganui).

If Walker can reproduce his form from the New Zealand championships, he could win all five of his games on greens at the Balclutha club green that will be slow after recent rain.

His main competition will come from Graham Low (Te Rangi), who is a member of the Southland sevens team, Bill Clements (Alexandra), who has won more than 60 Central Otago titles, and Bruce Kelly (Phoenix).

Taieri also has a strong pairs combination in Craig Forgie and Alistair Keith.

They could be matched by the Te Rangi pair of Earl Doidge and John Flynn and Central Otago's Trevor Ludlow and Pat Houlahan.

New Dunedin sevens representative Dave Archer is skip of the Taieri four and Robert Gibson is the third.

Te Rangi is skipped by Southland sevens representative Steve Sanders and Alexandra by Trevor Drake.

Three games will be played at the Balclutha green today and the final two tomorrow.

The division two competition is being played at the Balclutha club and the South Otago Town and Country club.

The competing division two teams are North End (Southland), Finegand (South Otago), Forbury Park (Dunedin), Alexandra (Central Otago), Phoenix (North Otago) and Fairlie (South Canterbury).

The women's competition will be played at Invercargill with Outram representing Dunedin in division 1 and Taieri in division 2.
